Noise Pollution caused by Fire Crackers:
The crackers that make a noise of more than 125 decibels at four metres distance from the point of bursting are banned by the law. The health hazards of the noise pollution are as follows:
Hearing loss, high blood pressure, heart attack and psychosomatic disturbances.
Sudden loud noise could cause temporary deafness or permanent relative deafness.
Pressurised Consumption:
The direct impact of Diwali celebrations and increased consumption is on the mother nature. Often, people go out and buy new items even when they don't need them. The misconception of people, the advertisements and publicity of various new items and schemes of free offers motivate people to buy more and more.
Effect on Mother-Nature:
You must realize that all man made items are made out of basic substances that come from Mother Nature. Be it plastic, metal, paper or cloth - all of these raw materials come directly from nature. Those sources that are non renewable (cannot be grown back) like fossil fuels and metal ores get depleted and will one day run out. Depletion of non renewable natural resources is one of the most significant impact of undesirable and pressurised consumptiion.
For instance, the gold earrings that you will buy on Diwali is coming from a gold mine that is not only depleting the gold resources of the earth, but in the process of mining is probably ruining several ecosystems.
You must know the fate of the thrown materials on the ecosystem. Solid waste created by human beings which is non biodegradable (does not easily decompose) is land-filled into the ground, will exist for centuries without completely getting integrated into the soil causing slow destruction of the ecosystem of the Mother Nature for generations to come. Further, the perils of the mining are also not less than the side effects of land-fills.
The 5-R Principles for Eco-friendly environment:
Reduce: Reduce the consumption of anything that we use,
Reuse: Reuse everything differently till maximum times,
Recycle: Recycle the products in disuse to usables.
Rethink: Rethink if is utomost necessary to purchase a pruduct,
Refuse: Refuse yourself the desire to purchase that you do'nt need at all.
So I have reasons to believe that this Diwali, you apply the above five- R principles in the purchase choices.
High Electricity Consumption:
Due to Diwali, there are increased usage of electricity much before the festival. The electrical energy sources as it is are already overloaded. The use of electric lights to adorn homes, shops, business establishments, monuments and roads requires a huge amount of electricity for several days. Alternatively, you can resort to the older tradition of burning oil lamps and reducing the electric lights. Here although you are using oil, the duration of the lamps is shorter and side effects on the ecosystem nil.
WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS DIWALI'2007
