The legend associated with the origin of Goddess Lakshmi's is that the Devatas/Angels (minor gods) were into competition against the Asuras/Satan (demons) to obtain Amrit (the Nectar of immorality). The Devatas took the suggestions from Lord Vishnu who appeared in the form of Kurma, a tortoise. Both Devatas and the Asuras decided to churn the oceans for the Amrit. The serpent Vasuki was created to be used as the churning rope tied around Mount Mandara. Lord Vishnu in the form of Kurma, the tortoise dived to the ocean floor and balanced Mount Mandara on his back.
The Kurma's cosmic clutch gripped the Mount Mandara that it could not sink into the ocean bed. Goddess Lakshmi appeared and blessed the Devatas with the Nectar of Immortality and then fourteen types of treasures too came to their hands. Goddess Lakshmi selected Lord Vishnu as Her husband. Lord Vishnu went with Goddess Lakshmi into His heaven. Lord Vishnu always remains with Goddess Lakshmi always and during travels in the heavens. And when Lord Vishnu descends on earth as an avatar (incarnation), He is accompanied by an equal avatar of Goddess Lakshmi.
