The Lord Krishna's famous doctrine of Nishkam Karma-Yoga bewildered people down the ages. They get confused among the thoughts of desires, desire-less work, work-less-ness, focused work etc. For the desirous, Lord Krishna says, "When a man occupies his mind with desires of the objects of senses, attachment to them is produced. From attachment comes desire and from desire comes anger. From anger arises delusion, from delusion there is loss of memory, from loss of memory is the destruction of intelligence and from destruction of intelligence he perishes". Gita II, 62-63.
Study conducted by Medical Doctors: Modern scientists have worked on the Medical and Physiological aspects of Action and have proved the theory of Nishkam Karma-Yoga of Lord Krishna as Scientifically true. Dr. Richmond, along with his associates conducted the long study at the US National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, USA. The study was on several monkeys who were taught computer operations and computer games and were rewarded with water & juice. The gene known as D2 produces receptors for "dopamine" a brain chemical involved in the perception of pleasure and satisfaction. Dr. Richmond blocked D2 temporarily for several weeks, docking the ability of their brain to detect dopamine. As a result, monkeys didn't sense pleasure & satisfaction, continued to work, operating their computer & levers like obsessed workaholics, unmindful of results & rewards and attained high productivity. In other words, focused action without expecting results, and that is, Nishkam Karma-Yoga. Dr. Richmond reported that the process of blocking D2 which docked the ability to feel & understand pleasure & satisfaction wasn't all that different from that of humans.
Lord Krishna says, "When the mind runs after the roving senses, it carries away his decision-making, like wind carries away a ship on the waters. Nor the desirer of desires, but that man attains peace (of achievement), in whom all desires merge, as rivers flow into the ocean which is full & motionless". Gita II-69-70.
The research findings of doctors proving Lord Krishna's work: The theory of Nishkam Karmayoga, now having been proved by the scientists, collaborates well with the most famous words of Lord Krishna, " You have a right to action alone and never at all to its results; neither let there be in you any attachments to inaction". Gita II-47. And "Perform action, O winner of wealth, (Arjuna), being fixed in Yoga, abandoning attachments ( to results), and even-minded in failure & success; (This) equilibrium of mind is the Yoga of Success. Gita II-48. Engrossed in works, offering results to God, will enhance the speed of their completion. Maharishi Patanjali in Yogsutra says, "Success is nearest to the Teevra-sanvega, the extremely fast seekers of success". 1.21.
So my dear brothers and sisters, if we keep thinking of the results; the dedication to the process of work gets diluted, the results are paradoxical in nature. Further, "Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worst to better", said Richard Hooker. To quote Nicole Kidman in "The Washington Post", "the Power of Work and the Power of Creativity can be your salvation".
