Meditation and Thoughtlessness

1. Zazen or Shunya, the Zero-Effect: In Zen Buddhism, Zazen means, "just sitting". The aspirants sit facing a wall to avoid mind's distractions aimed at being an observer of the mind. You can visualize Shunya, or the emptiness. Count and watch your breath with concentration. Try to be in the state of thoughtlessness. 

2. Mind is faster than speed of light: It is the characteristic of the mind to move faster than even light and hence is difficult to control initially. Don't get discouraged. You can regulate your mind by being aware of the thoughts as they pass. Gradually you will win over. 

3. Get Forward: Be inward and be an observer of mind and thoughts. Take everything that flows through your mind as the stream of your consciousness. Your thoughts will become very natural. Initially you may see distant memories, useless plans, unreal god or bad thoughts, future plans. You may see unexpected images, as if past life people friends, saints war heroes, elephants, mountains, river, ships, boats, animals, jungles etc. Lights with different colours, blue, yellow, red, green, black colors.  

Initially the light is abstract and small, later gradually light becomes wholesome, throughout forehead and the whole body reverberates with light.  At the end of the session, jot downs the experiences, visions and feelings. 

4. Detachment from thoughts: The thoughts keep flowing continuously in the sub-conscious mind. You can't stop the flow but you can train your mind to have detachment from your thoughts. Visualize your thoughts as clouds crossing over the blue sky into eternity. You can see them as if from a height, and they being on the earth and they are moving away. Also, you will see them as if on a screen or big wall and then scenes keep changing. Many thoughts will bring newer thoughts. Be aware all the time, curious to know. As it is, thoughts are passing, let them pass. Don't follow and then is the state of thoughtlessness.  

5. Be aware of the Space: Between the two incoming thoughts, images, there is space, in-as-much-as small. There is a catch. So focus on this momentary space and be aware of this mental space. This is solace. The thoughts have erred here as they are in discontinuity. Mentally rest in this space. With 3 Ps, you will be able to expand the time and space gradually. Your mind is getting in control of thoughts. 

6. The silence: To think to be in a noiseless environment seems impossible in today's situations.  We must be able to detach from the everyday sounds accepting them as such. You can train your mind to be in silence and that will be relaxing to the mind. Try silence for short durations while you use TV, radio or music system for this exercise. Turn inward. Try silence.  

This practice will be vital in situations when you are unable to escape noise. Experience silence detaching from noise. It will help you to listen many divine sounds those are within. 

7. Experience Peace: Sit in meditation. Use the above steps. Relax deeply, enter meditative state using breath counting, focus on breath, enter deeper, when thoughts and images arise, observe them detached and they are passing, focus and expand the space between. You will have a tranquil mind and keep feeling your breath. You will feel the peace. Even in this world, the peace is very much possible.
