Meditation - Element Based Meditation

Man is curious about the planets, stars and universe and the God, the truth till date. When you will meditate on the elements, you will find that you will be unable to separate them. This is an example of the interdependence and connectedness of all objects in the universe: 

1. The Earth, Air, Water and Fire: These were the elements first described by the Greeks but in the ancient Vedas  of Hindus explained them as five, namely, Earth, Air, Water, Fire, with the addition of Space. They added atoms, subatomic matter, Light, Soul, and Super-soul too.  Meditating on the elements will develop your awareness of the world around. 

2. The Earth: Put a bowl of earth to start this meditation. The earth is like your body, this relationship with the earth will make the presence of your consciousness firm in the present. You are beyond the body. You can feel connected or cut off from life. Further, direct your mind for images of the earth, mountains, forests, valleys, plains, fertile fields, barren fields and rocks, deserts, gardens, deep-rooted tree and the likes of the ones you see.  

3. The Air: Change the old ideas. Light an incense stick. Watch the smoke gently rising into the Air. Air is essential although being invisible. The nature of Air is change but your opinions and ideas may be fixed. It is time to blow the winds of change through your mind and feel refreshing within. In this mediation visualize images of gentle breeze or fast breeze that is gale, chilling cold, and warm, a dust storm. Change beforehand, as it will be turbulent when unexpected. Constantly review ideas, detach from them and release them into the air, and see these obsolete impractical ones one by one flying away before any storm or catastrophe breaks upon you. 

4. Water: The release of feelings. Keep a bowl of water in your front for meditation. Water is essential to life and your body is largely water. Water cleanses, sustains life, refreshes body of lethargy and unpleasantness. Water is related to the feelings of heart and when the extremes of emotions are there you may even cry.  Just like water, your emotions can be deep, blocked, muddy or crystal clear. In this meditation, visualize raindrops, ponds, lakes, streams, waterfalls, rivers and vast ocean.  

5. Fire: The transformation. Fire happens naturally and brings with it the dynamic change. The qualities of fire are: it generates light and heat, it purifies and consumes, its misuse may be dangerous yet Fire is necessary. In this meditation light a candle and meditate on the flame. Visualize the hearth and bone-fire, the forest fire, the volcano, the funeral pyre the beckon fire. Sometimes you must burn the old to create the new. 

6. Light: The effects of light may go unnoticed but, long periods of darkness or poor light can adversely affect your mood, thinking, life and perspective. For this meditation, visualize in mind the transition of night and day, morning and evening Sun, sunshine, brilliant sky, images of a rainbow. Become aware of quality of light in your life. 

7. Soul: Interdependence of Universe. All the elements are the aspects of this Soul. Soul is universal but can't be discovered through the 5 senses. You cannot comprehend it, yet all life depends on it. You will see the soul through the divine eye activated through a realized Guru. The soul is the source of all creation, all life. The soul shows all elements, feelings and creation are interdependent. Love, too, is invisible yet part of everyday life. You find meaning and connectivity in giving, caring and receiving love.  

8. Space: Space is boundary-less. Your mind is as infinite as space with infinite capacities. Its limitations are only created by you and are imaginary. Mediation on the "space" is finding infinite possibilities. The space is far more wide and vast than you see. Wide open spaces have special qualities to give you new perspective on the thoughts that crowd your mind daily. In this meditation, keep an empty bowl which actually contains abstract space. Visualize the infinity of the sky, the unlimited scope of the emptiness of this mindscape and the unlimited possibilities of the mind itself. 

9. Sub-atomic levels: All scientists of Physics have proved the jumping of sub atomic particles like the dance of Lord Shiva. The dance is creative act of love, joy, happiness and is vehicle of meditation. It can be dynamic body positions also. In this meditation, integrate your mind and body through visualization, breathing and movement like yoga. Yoga harmonizes mind, body, breath and Soul. In every yoga concentrate. The universal life force (Indian Prana or Chinese Chi) gets activated. The dynamic mind-body systems can be beneficial in making the person whole. They give flexibility, suppleness and alertness of the body and mind.  In this meditation be self-aware, attend to all elements and concentration all the time.  Life expresses itself through movement and flexibility.
